Lady Gaga, Taylor Kinney's racy magazine cover sparks criticism

Gaga and Kinney are the latest cover models for V Magazine, and the photo set to appear on the cover — while visually stimulating — was not professionally shot. In fact, it's a selfie Gaga and Kinney took after having sex on a canvas covered in paint.

As referenced in Gaga's tweet, all sales from their V Magazine issue will go to her Born This Way foundation.

"I asked [Taylor] to collaborate with me on a project to raise money and awareness about mental illness, [and] he immediately brought my attention back to this idea," Gaga wrote in the opening letter of the issue, which she guest-edited, according to Yahoo Style. "We made love on the canvas on a Sunday in Chicago... We made love amidst chaos. We talked about shootings. We made love amidst terrorism. And we talked about how people’s hearts are also suffering all over the world as they watch and witness a swell of violence. We made love amidst violence."

It seems like a well-meaning gesture, but some are criticizing the project for two main reasons: One, many fans feel the price to purchase the magazine is way too high, and two, not everyone thinks having sex with your fiancé and then taking a picture of it is all that charitable.

At $50 a pop, the magazine issue is certainly not cheap, but one Instagram user was quick to point out the price point was because the proceeds go to charity. "The cost of this cover is more than the others as 100% of proceeds support Lady Gaga's charity. You can read details of the charity on vmagazine.com," the Instagrammer wrote in response to nay-sayers.

But that hasn't stopped people from complaining.

Other critics are focusing on the fact that Gaga and Kinney taking naked pictures of themselves isn't exactly as artistic and charitable as they — along with their loyal following — think it is.

Surprisingly, there hasn't been any word of slut-shaming or bashing Gaga and Kinney for the charity shoot, which is probably because the cover photo is very tasteful, despite both subjects appearing nude.

What do you think of Gaga and Kinney's magazine cover? Is it all in the name of art and charity, or all about ego?
