I came across a quote from Jimi Hendrix that read, “In order to change the world, you have to get your mind together first”. Considering his life history, I thought it was kind of amusing; but it did get me thinking about mindset and goals. I firmly believe that creating a healthy lifestyle has to start with a healthy mind; for me, part of getting there was first figuring out what I really wanted out of life.
A couple of years ago, I started making vision boards for myself; it’s kind of how I realized that I had more of an entrepreneurial spirit, and wasn’t quite cut out to be a 9-5er. The thought of working my bum off for the rest of my life to build someone else’s business makes me wanna gag. So, I started using these boards as a way to reflect on my deepest desires and visually display my goals. The result? I made some decisions that pushed me way out of my comfort zone, but much closer to my goals.
Why Make a Vision Board?
- It’s like having a life changing therapy session for free: A lot of us want to have healthier and happier lives, but what the hell does that look like? And what do you need to do to get there? These boards are meant to be a visual representation of what accomplishing your goals would look like. They really force you to flex your introspective muscles and visually define your success.
- Transforms your mind from ??? to a goal crushing machine: When you have a huge board staring you in the face everyday, it’s a little hard not to handle your business and take those steps towards a happier place. On the day to day, it keeps you focused, and inspires you to keep working towards your goals. From this point, the decisions you make should be about bringing you closer to crushing your goals, not pushing them further away.
- Calls you out on your bullshit: If after you’ve taken the time to do some serious self-reflection, spent hours searching for images, assembled your board, and you’re still not making any moves…then I’d say there’s a bigger issue. But at least you’ll know it’s not because you don’t know what you want.
Tips for Creating Your Own Goal-Crushing Vision Board
- Do what it takes to get there…as long as it’s legal & somewhat sane: Making a commitment to make whole-hearted strides toward your goals is numero uno. What’s the point of going through all of this if the board is just gonna become another pretty picture on the wall? And I said, “somewhat sane” because if you’re an entrepreneur, for example, you’ll probably make some decisions that your friends and family will think are straight up crazy. But if you feel it in your bones, then ignore them and keep on moving.
- Pour some wine and light some candles, ‘cause you’re going on a date...with yourself: For a vision board to work, you’ll have to do a little uninterrupted soul searching. Sit down and really think about what it is that you want, and how you want your life to be. Be crystal clear about it, and make sure to jot it down. You’ll always want to have your goals in writing. Then decide what time frame your board will represent. Is it a year’s time, pretty far in the future, or a combo of both?
- Get Crafty: You know those old magazines you’ve been hoarding? (It can’t be just me) Flip through and gather any images, text and quotes that speak to you and align with your intentions. When I made my latest vision board, I chose images that mostly reflected my long term goals, and quotes that would remind me of the steps I should be taking to accomplish them.
- Display it & Keep it Fresh: Life happens…goals change and some get accomplished. But whatever happens, keep your board updated to reflect your current set of goals. Also, I know you may be tempted to make an online vision board, but nothing beats the constant visual reminder you’ll have with a physical board. Put it where you’ll see it every day.
Have you ever made a vision board? Did it help you at all?
